Discover Boating (on the Bosphorous)

When I booked my ticket to Istanbul last December, my friends were full of suggestions about what to see and do--get a hammam treatment, visit Topkapi Palace, shop at the Grand Bazaar, etc. But there was one tip that stood out from the rest--taking a boat cruise along the Bosphorous River.

As my friend Vanessa and I wandered around the Eminönü area, flooded with advertisements for 25 lira boat rides, something caught our eye: a two-hour boat cruise for just 10 lira (roughly $4). How could we resist? We bought our tickets, got seasick waiting for the boat to depart, and set off!

We saw incredible views, enjoyed tea for two lira, relaxed in the sun, and even made a few friends along the way. (Let's not forget that my hair flew all over the place, too.) After all, isn't that what boating's all about?

Prior to this cruise, it had been years since I'd been on a proper boat. I didn't realize how much I'd missed it! This experience evoked memories of canoeing and kayaking at camp, jet skiing with my friend's family, sipping beers on a pontoon one Fourth of July, and even some former beaus.

Have I inspired you yet?

Even if you don't live on the water or own a boat (like me), you can at least pretend to feel the wind blow through your hair, thanks to Discover Boating! They've put together a docu-series called Stories of Discovery as well as a short film to inspire you to climb aboard.

Still can't get enough? Take their quiz to find out which boat is perfect for YOU! According to Discover Boating, a jet boat is perfect for me. I'm not quite sure I have the funds (or the water access) for one, but a girl can dream, right?

But no matter what you do this summer, think about how boating might make it that much more special--like how the Bosphorous cruise completely made my Turkey trip! Whether it's across the world or in your backyard pond, embrace the weather and take to the water.
